The Little Things Moments with God, Vol. 173
The news spread quickly throughout the house. Their master, Naaman had leprosy. Tears filled her eyes as the little servant girl heard of his suffering. Though she had been taken from her home in Israel at such an early age, she trusted God and had grown to love her master and his wife.
The little servant girl had prayed for him throughout the day as she went about her duties until God brought a thought to her heart. There was something more she could do for Naaman! Though she was small, her God was big. She would tell her master’s wife about the prophet, Elisha, and God’s work through him.
Before entering Mrs. Naaman’s private quarters, she offered a quick prayer. Mrs. Naaman sat in the corner quietly weeping. The little servant girl crossed the room and “said to her mistress, ‘If only my master would see the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.’” (2 Kings 5:3)
Mrs. Naaman promptly shared the news with her husband. Naaman went to his master, the king of Aram, and told him what his Israelite servant girl exclaimed. The king of Aram acted swiftly. He would do all he could to help Naaman. Not only was Naaman a great man, but he was also a brave warrior. Naaman was respected and loved by all, so the king of Aram had wisely placed him in command of his army. He would send a letter to the king of Israel seeking healing for Naaman.
After a brief stop at the palace in Samaria, Naaman was sent to the home of the prophet, Elisha. Rather than coming out to greet him, Elisha sent Naaman a message. “Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.” (2 Kings 5:10)
His eyebrows pinching together, Naaman glared at Elisha’s messenger. “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy. Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in them and be cleansed?” (2 Kings 5:11-12) Naaman turned and stalked off.
Seeing the given task was quite simple, Naaman’s officers reasoned with him. They convinced Naaman to head to the Jordan and seeing the sense in this, he followed Elisha’s directions completely. After each dip into the water, his skin remained the same. As he straightened himself up after his seventh dip into the dirty Jordan waters, Naaman cautiously looked down at his skin. Joy overflowed as his eyes took in skin as healthy as a child’s. God had healed him! And in that moment, Naaman knew from then on he would worship God alone.
Arriving home, Naaman caught up his wife in his arms as he greeted her. Yet, there was one other person he wanted to see. Naaman found the little servant girl straightening their room. Approaching her gently, he lifted his sleeve to show her the healthy skin on his arm. Naaman shared with her the story of how God had not only healed his skin but had also healed his heart – all because the little servant girl faithfully obeyed the small task God had given her. Naaman’s life was changed.
You do not have to be big or have a great name to do something great for Jesus. All you need is faithfulness to do what He calls you to do. Sometimes all it takes is a kind word, a friendly smile, a meal, or help with a task. Though it may seem small, it may be the very thing God uses to open someone’s heart to Him. Be faithful in the little things and watch God do great things!
