Playing the Game Moments with God, Vol. 115
My family loves to play games. We have our standard favorites, but we are always up to trying a new one, finding each game slightly different. Designers of games not only create the parts needed but also determine the way the game is played. When someone purchases a game, they must read and follow the instructions for it to be played the way it was designed. Trying to play a game without knowing the way it was intended to be played leads to confusion, frustration, and maybe even the desire to quit playing altogether. Following instructions is an important part of playing the game. In the same way, following God’s instructions are an important part of living life, especially a life that honors our Creator.
During the reign of King Artaxerxes of Persia, Ezra returns to Jerusalem. Ezra 7 opens giving the genealogy of Ezra, which shows him as part of the priestly line going back to Aaron. He is a scribe, meaning he is well versed in the law of Moses and capable of not only interpreting God’s law but also in teaching it to the people.
“For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel.” (Ezra 7:10)
Ezra loved the study of God’s Word. He understood the importance of listening to what the Creator and Ruler of the Universe had to say. Not only had God designed the world and each person in it, but He also gave instructions on how to live. Ezra knew God’s Law through and through, but he did not just know it, he lived it. As Ezra drew near to God and studied His Word, it changed him. God’s thoughts and ways became Ezra’s, and he longed to do God’s will. He also longed for others to experience this same change and have a heart for God, so Ezra shared God’s Word.
Ezra knew the power of the Bible. He knew if God’s people would just allow God’s Word to guide their lives, they would live the best life they could possible live.
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:12-13)
Our Creator not only specifically designed each person, but He gave us a written set of instructions on how to best live life. He did not want us to walk through life lost, confused, frustrated, and in constant conflict with one another. In His detailed instructions, He tells us how to turn from sin, how to follow His ways, how to love one another. Not only does God give us the background of His design and describe who He is as the Creator and Ruler, He also gives us an example of how to “play the game” as we learn of Jesus. He provides an instructor, as the Holy Spirit lives inside each child of God. He knows the thoughts and intents of the heart. He helps us to understand the game and stick to the rules.
So how are you at playing games? Do you read through the instructions or try to figure out how to play it on your own? What about the game of life? Do you think you know the game of life and try to follow your own set of rules?
God gave us a book of instructions that provides guidance and wisdom. As you draw near to God and spend time in His Word, you will find His thoughts and ways become yours. You will find strength to run from temptation. You will find your love for God deepens, your love for others grows, and the thoughts and intents of your heart honor Him. The way you “play the game” will lead to victory, because you are living life the way God designed you to live it. As you set your heart on the Word of God, not only will you know the Designer, but you will live life the way He intended, and you will want to share “your game” with others.
Are you ready to “play the game”? Spend time reading God’s Instructions today!
