Am I Worthy? Moments with God, Vol. 146
John the Baptist was a unique person from the start. God blessed him with a unique purpose – to prepare the way for the Messiah. Not much is heard about John in his growing up years, but as he is introduced back into the story, he is described as one who wore “clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.” (Luke 3:4) Yes, John was unique, but he had a message to share, and people listened.
In talking of the coming King as he baptized the repentant, John described Jesus. “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry.” (Luke 3:11) He pointed people away from himself and sought to prepare them for the coming King. Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.
“John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” (Luke 3:14) “Why are you coming to me?” he questioned Jesus. “You are far greater. You should be baptizing me.” He felt unworthy to carry Jesus’ sandals, let alone baptize him. Yet, Jesus considered him worthy to fulfill this task. His baptism would be an example for believers to follow and a picture of salvation as they died to sin and were resurrected to new life in Christ.
John felt unworthy, but Jesus knew the unique role John had to play. John the Baptist prepared His way and through His baptism, believers would show their identity in Christ. Both men came into this world with a unique purpose. One was worthy, one felt unworthy. Jesus, the only one worthy, became the Savior of the world so that those accepting His gift would be made worthy.
Both had a unique purpose from the start. John prepared the way for the King. Jesus prepared the way for us to be with the King. No, we are not worthy, but in His love, He humbly came to earth because He says we are worthy.
